Where am I?

I thought of writing here often but I think I've been preoccupied with work and family as well as maintaining my fitness goals. I've slacked on my blogging and sharing my fitness journey with you all.

I've actually been going back and forth with my other blog, "Introducing Tyfferz"
If you ever have the time to read, you are more than welcome to peruse that blog.

The Feeling when you read "Early Registration"

Does that jolt you with excitement and that you are waiting anxiously to sign up? I felt that way yesterday when I read my email that the 2013 Great Aloha Run will be having an early registration at this health event in downtown Honolulu. Never mind about the free tote bag, sign me up for the run because this gives me a great big incentive to making sure that I stay consistent with my running and eating habits.

I'm surrounded!

Did you ever contemplate something for a period of time not sure which direction to go then all of a sudden...

You run across people discussing the very thing you are considering...

You are reading a magazine, article or book and again-it mentions the very thing you are considering...

You laugh about it

Call it coincidence

Or call it fate...

Especially when you are on journey of pursuing a goal like trying to be more healthy and lose weight.

This is me-I'm surrounded by advertisements of half-marathons, which I have been thinking about.

I don't think I'm ready (will ever be) ready for a full marathon but I think I can do a half-marathon IF I consistently train.

In fact, several half marathons are on my fitness bucket list.

What about you? Has this ever happened to you?

Up the ante, woman

It's been officially a month that I've been away from group classes and I'm still considering a return. However, I just weighed myself today after avoiding the scale because there's been remarks that I looked like I dropped weight (hmmm...)

I ran to one of the clinics I used to work in to use their scale (because it's digital and huge).

I lost 2.8 pounds.

Shall I jump for joy? Of course, because I was on a plateau and I had to ante up the TRX workouts as well as pushing myself to running faster instead of pacing myself. Mind you, I'm still keeping myself between 2 to 3 miles because I don't want to strain myself too soon.

Another thing that I have been telling myself is to ante up the food menu in regards to choosing things healthier instead of just eating moderately with a mixture of healthy and non-healthy foods. I figure ante up the food menu to focusing on healthier foods ranging from good protein to complex carbs as well as watching my protein, carbs, and fat intake not only on myfitnesspal.com but myself is a good accountability tool.

Plus, I'm about to re-do my workout schedule to include some strength training not just with TRX but with weights. I won't do away with my running but I do want to include HIIT with lateral ladders to do some HIIT in between TRX sets.

Ahhh...motivation.

What do you do when your numbers have dropped and your clothes are getting a little looser?

I'm going through a moment

Do you have one of those days that you want to work out but your body is not moving?

You have your workout clothes on and you are basically...

Brooding

Right now I am on a hiatus from group classes because I need to push myself on my own. Does that make sense? And I feel as if I'm failing like I am not doing enough.

This past week I was not feeling well and missed my workout schedule. So during this week, I planned that I'll wake up in the morning to head to work early so I can start walking / running the hills.

That hasn't happened.

I shared to myself that this was the week to really clean up my daily meals.

That hasn't happened either.

Then I started brooding and thinking probably I need to go back to bootcamp classes to get me motivated.

Hmmmm...wait a minute. This means that I'm admitting I'm a weakling and I can't do this by myself?

I had to snap out of that funky thought and I started reading the fitness blogs that I subscribe to and noticed that majority of these ladies are on THEIR OWN. So if they can do it, I can too.

Plus bootcamp classes have prices, which I am trying to be a good money manager.

Since this is the month of June. I think I will write down some goals.

1) Go to bed early: Everyone needs a good nights rest to wake up in the morning to work out

2) Stick to my workout schedule

3) Start using weights. At a certain age especially when you are 40, your body needs the balance of cardio and strength training.

4) Create a daily menu that is not unreasonable but doable.

5) That I can do this through prayer and strength that only God can give me

6) Start running a little more consistently because I really want a better timing in upcoming races I'm going to sign up for!

I feel better now :)

How about you? Have you ever been in a funky mode of fitness? What did you do? What do you do?

The Good Feeling

Few nights ago I posted a pic of my progress on Instagram and the question came out twice, "Doesn't it feel good?"

Few things came to mind:

1) It feels good because I made a commitment to lose weight-to be healthy.
2) My original plan transformed into something more than I was expecting of myself.
3) I went further than expected by finding that I like running (I'm a beginner).
4) Within the past six months, I've entered two runs.
5) I don't starve myself to lose weight but I exercise and eat in moderation.
6) I find that group workouts (www.sohifitness.com) are good because others will motivate you who are going in the same direction (I never cared for group workouts until after I signed up with SOHI Fitness).
7) I like that I can workout with my husband.
8) TRX suspension training is great
9) My plan is not to stop but keep going.
10) My plan is to enter more runs and build myself to run a half marathon.

So, with that short question came a myriad of realizations and my answer is yes, it feels good because although I am only halfway to my goal, I didn't realize how far I've come from August 2011.

The Perfect Fit

I've always loved shoes (what woman doesn't?) and with loving shoes, there are preferences.

In my younger years, it was the brand with little thoughts of comfort.

As I got older, I had to say goodbye to my favorite brand like Nike because it was not a good fit for my feet. I chose Asics because it was a good brand and I noticed it felt good for my flat and "wide" feet :(

Anyhow, back to shoes, if someone shared over a year ago "Tiff, in 2012 you are going to be exercising consistently, almost to your weight goal AND you will be mainly shopping for workout apparel." I would have been smiling as I snacked on junk food.

Lo and behold, August 2011 was the beginning of the new chapter in my life.

Along with my search for the perfect shoe.

I noticed Merrell brand minimalist running shoes when a girl in my boot camp used it. I liked the look of it (no thoughts of "is it good for my feet?). As soon as I got my hands on the computer, I researched and promptly ordered a pair ($100).

I wore it to my next class after I received it and mind you, this was only about 6 weeks into my new chapter. My trainer frowned and bluntly told me, "I wouldn't recommend those shoes because if you are not used to it, you can strain or tear your calf muscles." I still chose to use it during beach boot camp. However, Friday workouts are at a park in Honolulu that has hills.

To make a long story short...I strained my left calf muscle attempting to run up a hill.

I was out for 6 weeks because I listened to fashion instead of reason.

After that incident, I researched again for shoes that were good for people with flat feet. My dad who is a runner shared with me that he only buys Saucony brand.

I stuck with my Asics but noticed that Saucony had a nice MINIMALIST shoe.

(Pause) Yes, I was hard headed on minimalist shoes.

I bought me a pair and will only use it for my indoor TRX class, which my trainer nodded her head in approval. I'll use it for walking and nothing else.

Lesson learned to buy running shoes that will cater to your feet especially if you are a beginner runner like me who runs 2-3 miles every other day.

Note: Saucony website has a tool that will prompt you to enter the type of feet you have as well as the type of shoe you are looking to buy. It will narrow the results for you on your options. Another thing, if you live in Hawaii, go to Runner's Room. They cater to the running community in Hawaii.

Investing in a good pair of exercise and/or running shoes is worth the investment. It minimalizes injuries as well as provide comfort while looking fashionably athletic :)
